Blogging and Note Cards - January 4th - January 8th

The intent behind what we're doing in class this week is really to get students to understand the importance in thinking about academic issues outside of the classroom. As we prepare to become stronger students of history, our responsibility is to try and understand different perspectives about how history is looked at by other individuals as well as how they perceive the events, court cases, policies, etc. which ultimately affect our lives today. It's been said that, "in order to know where we're going, we need to understand where we've been" and that only happens when you have a better understanding of history and the things that affect who we are now and why we are facing whatever issues we face in society.

Students will be introduced to note cards in order to better understand FACTS about history. It is perfectly legitimate to understand history from a conceptual perspective, understanding generally what happened, why it happened and whether or not it was right or wrong. The more important work in history however, is done when those ideas are combined with historical evidence, namely facts. It's those facts which will ultimately support your argument and serve as historical evidence. Note cards will help you memorize some of those facts by helping you to break them down into definitions of terms or concepts on one side and the actual term or concept on the other.

  1. In my opinion i think that the note cards that he is providing for us is a great idea. Mostly because it makes it easier to study, and its handy when you need to look at the information. Now on the whole blogging thing i think its pretty cool to be able to express how the class is going and what we have learned it kind of serves as a kind of therapy. I hope it works as good ass i think it might. Plus other students can come and get information that someone got that they didnt. Its useful.

  2. What we are doing with the blogging although usefull is not necessary. More readings about the readings? ? ? I dont exactly find this important especially since we have to reply to it. I think the blog should exist but as side comments that we can use as a tool to understand the reading better but I find no reasoning in us having to add on to our work load instead helping us with our existing one. If people see more work and they apply the same amount of effort like you said the success goes down but if we see something that will help us with our existing work people will find the work easier put in more effort and the success I think will go up.
The note cards I completly agree with but we should have started them as we went through the chapters. Better late then never i suppose they will be a good reminder of information we have already gone over. Flash cards are always usefull when it comes to any subject dealing with memorizing facts or numbers. I will use the flash cards and im sure many other will too.

  3. I think the cards are going to help us a lot to remember importing events of U.S History. Well to me is going to help me a lot because i always forget stuff. Is going to be easier to study the cards than a whole document that you dont understand. I think too that is going to save more hours from reading long documents that i berely understand it. In the cards is all facts and they are short and could understanded more. it's helpful

  4. I think its better with the note cards becuase we memorize faster and if we where to forget the answers to our work we can look for it on the back of the notecard. The blogging would help because other people can help you with what ever you dont get. and i think its better than the rest of the stuff we have done.

  5. i think that these note cards you provided for us will be very useful in the future. Instead of reading from the book all of the information are on colorful note cards which is alot easier and not as boring, that way, i may actually read them. as for this blogging thing.. i think its thoughtful of you to give us another source to help us, but honestly do you think all your students will be checking this? i agree with manny "its useful but not necessary", but i would rather do this than do APARTS.

  6. The note cards are going to help us a lot in memorizing and preparing ourselves for whatever it is that we need to know about history in class. Also to help us retain the information we discuss in class. It will be easier for us to go back and to have a reference to the information.

  7. The note cards that have been provided to us are a very good idea. I believe flash cards are a great way of captivating information. It would have been easier if we went created the note cards pertaining to a section as we learned it but they still help now as a review. I also think the blog spot is a cool way to recap information and give an input. Overall both ideas are great because they help us learn the information better.
